An electric plug is a small device that connects an appliance or device to the mains power supply. Internally, it consists of conductive pins, terminal screws, and firm connections to the device’s power cable. The plug is enclosed in an insulated housing to protect users from electric shock. It includes a strain relief mechanism so that pulling the cable doesn’t damage internal connections. Many plugs also have a built-in fuse as a safety measure. In three-pin designs, the earth pin provides a safety path for electrical fault currents.

  • Pins / Prongs

    • Live, Neutral, (and Earth/Ground) pins — conduct current from socket into the device.

    • Typically made of brass or other conductive metal for low resistance.

  • Terminal Connections / Screws

    • Inside the plug, where the wire’s conductors (copper) are screwed or clamped to the pin terminals. This is how the plug is wired to the cord.

  • Insulation / Housing

    • The outer plastic or polymer body that holds everything, keeps live parts covered, prevents electric shock.

  • Strain Relief / Cable Grip

    • A part that holds / clamps the incoming cable so that pulling on the wire doesn’t loosen the terminals. Prevents damage to internal connections.
